Alone in the Dark Question - 1992 PC game

I playing this on Dosbox and I'm near the end of the game in the cavern
level. I'm supposed to use the pirate/Dance Hall key on the treasure
chest to get a gem. When ever I try to open it, it just says "It's closed"

Any ideas?

Are you sure you have the right key? I think the treasure chest key is
a different one from the dance hall key. Did you get the key off the
mantel of the fireplace in the dance hall?
